I was chatting to a Kiwi early this morning and we briefly got onto the overnight breaking news about their PM, Jacinda Ardern. She is not as popular over there as she seems to come across from the view from here, apparently, but I want to give her a round of applause for her brave, yet vulnerable, admission that there is nothing left in the tank.
We have too many leaders who aspire to be "world king" (or similar), for whom the gaining and holding power feeds something insatiable within them, and so to have the public acknowledgement that, sometimes, the demands of leadership cannot be sustained forever is important. At the risk of getting too political we also need to acknowledge that those who do not display this honest vulnerability do not necessarily do a better job, in fact they may do a deal more long term damage, because keeping the grip on power is the most important metric for them. I'm not sure I trust Dominic Cummins any more than Boris Johnson, but according to a report in the Independent referring to the handling of COVID
‘Chaos isn’t that bad - it means people have to look to me to see who is in charge’ PM allegedly said
I rest my case.
