We were having a bit of waffle hour before Homegroup last night. There was at least one Medic in attendance and also the mum of a recently qualified one too, so this news story had to be brought up about the reported 6% increase in the mortality rate in the month when the newly qualified Docs hit the wards.
We thought about whether newly qualified Clergy had a similarly detrimental effect on the workings of the Church, and I couldn't help but joke that it was probably the other way round - a 6% increase in the Kingdom of God in those initial weeks after each round of Ordinations...
I am going to use the Parable of the Sower as my Harvesty-related must-have-something-else-to-say-about-Harvest School Assembly this morning. We could all point out people who seem to be loaded with potential, but when the moment comes simply don't come up with the goods; the sportsman or woman who dominates the scene at lower levels, but goes to pieces on the bigger stage. I will invite the children to think about the ways in which the Harvest of 30, 60 or a 100 fold might be seen around them...
...and I want to ask that question of myself too...and the Churches in my care...and the Institution of which I am part...where are you, me, we coming up with the goods?
I get a bit bored of Church related talk where the Kingdom of God is identified in minuscule things. Yes, I know Jesus spoke of the mustard seed, but when we lose the confidence to grab the world by the scruff of the neck and seek, work for and demand change on the bigger stage then I have to question the whole shooting match...
...where are you, me, we coming up with the goods?

...hmm, but it's funny... just recently I've started to spot that I'm having more effect on some 'big issues' because I'm attending to doing my job in apparently ordinary ways...
