I have watched this all the way through now once, and will watch it another couple of times as some of the dialogue is tricky to follow, and the way that the characters trawl back through memories means you need to concentrate. Having said that I quite enjoyed it, despite lighting and camera work that reminded me more of pop videos than traditional movies.
The two lead characters, Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslett), are lovers who grow increasingly irritated with each other. After one particular row he goes to find her in the bookshop where she works, and she totally blanks him. He then, by chance, discovers that she has had him erased from her memories. In a fit of revenge he goes to get the same treatment done, but as he goes back into his memory of their relationship he realises he doesn't want to lose her...
I would be interested to watch this again and see whether it is something I could use as aprt of our Marriage Preparation Day. Previously I have used the final scene from About a boy, but the closing scene of TESOASM seems to convey the sense in which even a loving relationship will contain moments of irritation and frustration. The scene at the end where Joel and Clem agree that they are going to get on each other's nerves is true of many relationships, but he decides that this is okay, and actually as much part of the relationship as the happy times. (At least that's my memory of what happened, assuming it hasn't been altered...).
